Spotlight On: Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach
Of all of the beautiful places to live on the Gold Coast, Hedges Avenue in Mermaid Beach is one of the most spectacular of them all, with its enviable absolute beachfront lifestyle.
Mermaid Beach is a lovely beachside community, with plenty of retail, cafes, restaurants, bars, and the Star Casino all close to hand. Of all the desirable streets in this beachside suburb to live in, Hedges Avenue, which runs along the beachfront, is the most illustrious, having gained the nickname ‘Millionaire’s Row’ during the 1980s.
Running from Old Burleigh Road in the North, to Albatross Road in the South, this is prime Gold Coast real estate.
Renowned residents on Millionaires Row
Hedges Avenue has lived up to its million-dollar moniker over the years, with well-known past and current residents of the street including 1970s AFL footballer Rod Galt, former Hayman Homes owner Stephen Anderson, former Tourism Queensland chairman Terry Jackman, and current Westpac chairman John McFarlane, among them.
In 2018, billionaire businessman and politician Clive Palmer purchased a $12M Hedges Avenue beach house, complete with a gym and climate-controlled wine cellar, as a holiday home. Village Roadshow CEO Clark Kirby has also recently taken up residence.
Meet Hedges Avenue local, Glen White
Glen White – now retired, formerly the co-founder of valuation firm LandMark White and Herron Todd White – first moved to Mermaid Beach in 1974 while he was still commuting to work in Brisbane.
In 1982 Glen bought his first home on Hedges Avenue at number 77. He sold this in 1988 to snap up a different double-block beachfront property on Hedges Avenue. According to Glen, 25 years ago a beachfront home on Hedges Avenue cost $1.2M, but today would run at nearly five times that at $5M.
After 45-years as a local, Glen is still enthusiastic about the beachside lifestyle and close-knit community he has found there. We had a chat to Glen about what life has been like in Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach over the years.
What's my property worth?
Thanks for chatting to us, Glen. What first attracted you to the street?
There are obviously not many absolute beach-front lots on the Gold Coast, so it’s unusual in that respect. It’s just spectacular being here, right on the beach. The views are amazing and there’s always activity happening on the beach. We can watch the whales as they go up to Hervey Bay to calf and come back again.
The original subdivisions of the ‘Mermaid Beach Estate’ were back in the 1920s. But how has the street changed since you first moved in?
The houses that were first built here in the 1950s were holiday homes for people from Brisbane. It didn’t start getting popular until the 1980s, when more families began moving in and building mansions, like the Thiess mining family and Terry Page, the famous bookmaker.
What do you love most about living on Hedges Avenue today?
There are beautiful, expensive properties but it’s not a formal place. It’s a very casual lifestyle here. It also enjoys a very central Gold Coast location. We’re walking distance from Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, the Star Casino and the Oasis and Oracle Shopping Centres. All have had recent redevelopments, bringing in high-end retailers and new restaurants. Where I live there are at least five coffee shops within 200-metres.
What’s the local community like?
The local community includes families with children, retirees, people from all walks of life who like the casual lifestyle. The local Mermaid Beach Lifesaving Club is a great meeting place for residents.
There aren’t a lot of property transactions that take place here, because people who live here tend to own for a long time – they don’t want to sell as such as it’s such a great place to live.
